Frequently Asked Questions

What are your Shoppe open hours?

Monday - Saturday: 8.30am – 4pm
Sunday: Closed

Where can you find the Shoppe?

In the heart of Melton Mowbray’s town centre.
10 Nottingham Street, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. LE13 1NW.
We are currently undergoing major refurbishment during the first four months of 2024. A pop-up shop is available in the Bell Centre, unit 19a.

Do you allow dogs inside?

Unfortunately given the design of the Shoppe layout and frequent busy periods, we have decided it isn’t safe to allow dogs in this space. However, we do make exceptions for Guide and Support dogs.

I’ve been recommended to visit the Shoppe but not sure what it is?

Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe is famous for 3 things:

1) John Dickinson opened his bakery in 1851 where Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe still remains today.

2) It was Mary Dickinson, Grandmother of John Dickinson, who is credited with creating the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie that we know and love today. First using a wooden dolly to hand-raise the pastry, then introducing jelly to protect the meat inside.

3) This iconic grade two listed building is the home of Melton Mowbray Pork Pies: Dickinson & Morris, Mrs King's and Walker's as well as other sweet & savoury pastry treats.

Beyond this, we offer locally sourced artisan produce such as beers, gin, chocolate, chutneys, cheeses, honey, Melton Hunt Cake, and much more. .

What defines a Melton Mowbray Pork Pie?

For a pie to be considered a Melton Mowbray pie it must meet 3 main criteria.

1) It must be baked within the Protected Geographic Indication (PGI) boundary of Melton Mowbray. If you draw a line around Stamford, Nottingham, Leicester, Northampton and Grantham, you’ll find Melton Mowbray is in the middle!

2) Made with British uncured pork (grey in appearance, not pink like ham).
Additives can only be salt, pepper and nutmeg.

3) Must be baked free-standing, not supported in a tin or hoop.

What is the shelf life of your Melton Mowbray Pork Pies?

All of our products will have a BBE date label on them. We try to ensure that your pork pies reach you with a life on them of 6 days.

How to store your pies correctly and can they be frozen?

Storage: Keep the pork pie wrapped in its parchment paper and store in the fridge at 0°C - 8°C. An hour before eating your pork pie, take it out of the fridge, remove the paper thus allowing the flavours to develop.
Freezing: Keep the pork pie wrapped in its parchment paper, then wrap in tinfoil. Place the wrapped pie in a polythene freezer bag and place in the freezer. Will store for up to 3 months.
Defrosting: Remove the pork pie from the freezer. Remove the polythene bag but leave the pork pie wrapped in the tinfoil and parchment paper. Place the wrapped pork pie in your fridge to defrost for 24 hours. An hour before eating, take the pie out of the fridge, remove all wrapping thus allowing the flavours to develop.

What to expect with our deliveries

As most of our products require chilling, including our flagship Pork Pies, we want to make that our items are received in the best possible condition and same quality as if they were bought in the Shoppe. Our deliveries are sent on a Next Day service via DHL and packaged appropriately. The contents are in insulated padding called WoolCool, surrounded with ice packs in a thick cardboard box with shred to pad the contents.

Do you do wholesale/trade sales?

If you're not yet a customer and would like to enquire about becoming a stockist, please contact wholesale@porkpie.co.uk.

Do we ship abroad?

Currently we are sorry to say to all our friends overseas, that for logistical reasons and keeping our products fresh is too complicated at this moment in time. It is something we are working on in the background and would love to change this one day in the future!

How much is your standard shipping?

Our standard shipping is next day delivery via courier DHL at £7.95. We have factored in the costs of our packaging solutions from our sustainable insulation from WoolCool, ice packs and thick grade cardboard boxes.
